The retention phase of your orthodontic treatment is essential. When your braces are removed, you will receive an upper and lower retainer which are to be worn full time for three months. Following that critical time period, we recommend wearing retainers at night long-term. Your beautiful smile and straight teeth must be maintained through following the instructions given by Dr. Simister. In our office, we use the following three types of retainers:
Hawley Retainers
Hawley retainers have been a long-term tradition in orthodontic retention. Fabrication of this retainer requires specialized skills and is generally made in a professional lab. During the retention phase of treatment, Dr. Simister will make minor adjustments to your Hawley retainer in order to maintain good alignment of your teeth. When properly cared for, the Hawley retainer will be effective for many years.
Clear Retainers
The clear retainer is removable and covers all of the teeth in 3 dimensions (clear retainers look much like Invisalign® trays). It is made of a specialized/durable plastic which is fabricated to perfectly fit your teeth. Patients often comment on superior comfort and esthetics this retainer provides. If desired, the clear retainer can also be used for teeth whitening.
Bonded Retainers
Lingual retainers are bonded directly to the inside surface of the front teeth. This retainer is very effective at keeping space closed and holding teeth tightly into alignment. Often we suggest a bonded retainer in cases of significant pre-treatment crowding and only on patients demonstrating ideal oral hygiene (brushing). A bonded retainer must be kept clean to prevent plaque and tartar build-up near the gumline. If the retainer becomes loose or broken, please call our office immediately to have it repaired. With proper care, this retainer is the best at keeping teeth perfectly aligned long-term.
